Servings 10 pieces

Ingredients

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 1 teaspoons sugar
  • teaspoons salt
  • 2 tbsp olive oil extra virgin

Instructions

  • In a small bowl, combine the warm water, sugar, and yeast. Stir gently and let it sit for about 5 minutes until the mixture becomes frothy.
  • In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour and salt. Make a well in the center and pour in the yeast mixture and olive oil.
  • Mix the ingredients together using a wooden spoon or your hands until a dough forms.
  • Transfer the dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead for about 8-10 minutes until the dough is smooth and elastic.
  • Place the dough in a greased bowl and cover it with a clean kitchen towel or plastic wrap. Allow it to rise in a warm place for about 1-2 hours until it doubles in size.
  • Preheat your oven to 475°F (245°C). If you have a baking stone or baking steel, place it in the oven to preheat as well.
  • Once the dough has risen, punch it down gently to release the air. Transfer it back to the floured surface and divide it into 10 equal-sized pieces.
  • Take one piece of dough and roll it out into a circular shape, about ¼ inch thick. Repeat the process with the remaining pieces of dough.
  • Carefully transfer the rolled-out dough onto a baking sheet or preheated baking stone/steel.
  • Place the baking sheet or stone/steel in the preheated oven and bake for about 4-5 minutes until the pita bread puffs up and turns golden brown. Keep a close eye on them to prevent overcooking.
  • Once the pita bread is done, remove it from the oven and transfer it to a wire rack to cool.
  • Repeat the rolling and baking process with the remaining dough portions until you've made all the pita bread.

Notes

Serve the pita bread warm or at room temperature. They can be sliced in half to make pockets for stuffing with your favorite fillings or served alongside dips and spreads.
